To put this epic battle in context, Napoleon had just signed the Treaties of Tilsit, thereby ending the War of the Fourth Coalition, and the perfect way to celebrate, he decided, was with a rabbit hunt. His chief of staff Alexandre Berthier set about collecting the bunnies needed for such a celebration, while also inviting a selection of the most prominent men in the military. He wanted to impress so he revealed hundreds (and some sources even say thousands) of bunnies caged and eager to flee as soon as they were released – or so he thought. Once the rabbits were released from their cages they did the exact opposite of what all the men expected – instead of running away in terror they all bounded straight toward Napoleon. Nervous laughter quickly transformed into horror as this fluff of beasts began to climb up the French emperor’s legs. Napoleon’s men attempted to beat them off with sticks but the swarm was, quite literally, impossible to shake off. Although most likely reluctant to admit it, Berthier was to blame – instead of trapping wild hares he had purchased tame rabbits, they were used to seeing humans so they were expecting Napoleon to feed them their dinner rather than shoot them. Eventually Napoleon did manage to escape the fluffy plague, but only by fleeing to his coach, the bunnies in hot pursuit apparently “divided into two wings”, some even made it into the carriage. Ching Shih (also known as Shi Xianggu, Madame Ching, Zhèng Shì, Jehng Sih, and Cheng I Sao) is without a doubt one of most unique pirate leaders of all time. Born in 1775, she managed to distinguish herself in that fashion not only because she was a female, or that she managed to personally command the force of over 300 pirate ships and 20 thousand pirates or even because she managed to forge alliance with many other pirate leaders who followed her and created a naval force that counted over 1500 naval ships and 180 thousand pirates. In addition to all these incredible feats, the thing that makes her almost unique in entire sea pirate history is the fact that she managed to walk away from piracy unpunished and live her days in peace until she died from old age in 1844. Death is already an uncomfortable topic to talk about, let alone the idea of human sacrifices. From the pre-Columbian era, human sacrifices were pretty common in Maya culture. The Maya civilization covered a large area of land which included southeastern Mexico and northern Central America. The reasoning behind this ritual was due to the belief that it was offering of nourishment to the gods. The sacrifice of a living creature was a powerful offering and a human sacrifice was the ultimate one. Usually, only high status prisoners of war were sacrificed while other captives were used as the labor force. There were several different ways these sacrifices occurred. The most common ways were decapitation and heart removal. Dedication to a new building or new ruler required a human sacrifice. Many of these were depicted in Maya artwork and sometimes took place after the victim was tortured (beaten, scalped, burned, etc.). If the sacrifice happened through heart removal it took place in the courtyard of the temple or summit of the pyramid-temple. The person was painted blue and wore a headdress while being held down by four attendants representing the cardinal directions. The nacom, or official, used a sacrificial knife to cut into the victims chest and pull out the heart. He then would pass the heart to the priest, known as the chilan, where then the blood would be smeared onto the image of the god. Once this occurred, the body was thrown down the steps and skinned by assistant priests but the hands and feet were left alone. The chilan then wore the skin of the victim and performed a ritual dance of rebirth. These rituals provided hope and security to the Maya culture and demonstrated their own outlooks on death.
